Who We Are

Bangladesh, with a coastline stretching over 710 km along the Bay of Bengal, is home to around 35 million people in coastal zones. These regions are rich in biodiversity and natural resources, but they are also among the most climate-vulnerable areas in the world, facing escalating threats from environmental degradation, climate change, and human-induced pressures. The major threats are Sea-Level Rise and Coastal Erosion, Salinity Intrusion, Loss of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, Pollution and Plastic Waste, Cyclones, Storm Surges, and Flooding, Climate-Induced Displacement, Waterlogging and Drainage Congestion, Gendered Vulnerabilities and Mental Health Impacts, Livelihoods and Coastal Communities. Considering the overall situation, Coastal Environment Research and Improvement Organization (CERIO) plays a crucial role in tackling the complex and challenges facing coastal environment. Through research, strategic policy advocacy, and community-centered initiatives, CERIO works to ensure the long-term resilience and sustainability of coastal and marine environments.

CERIO is dedicated to advancing the health of coastal environment through a holistic approach that integrates environmental protection, social equity, and economic viability. Through its work, the organization aims to bridge the divide between life science, policy, and local action, creating solutions that safeguard coastal biodiversity & natural resources, support sustainable livelihoods, and build adaptive capacities for vulnerable communities.
In this way, CERIO is a driving force in coastal conservation, ensuring that coastal environment remain vital and resilient in the face of climate change, resource exploitation, and habitat degradation. By aligning ecological integrity with social inclusion and sustainable development, CERIO leads efforts to create a future where coastal communities thrive in harmony with their environment.

Principles:

  • Transparency and Accountability: Maintain ethical standards, financial integrity, and accountability in all operations.
  • Nature-Based Solution (NbS): Integrates natural processes and ecosystem management strategies to address societal challenges, including climate change, disaster risk reduction, and biodiversity loss.
  • Locally Led Adaptation (LLA): Ensures that communities most affected by climate change drive and shape adaptation efforts based on their priorities, knowledge, and needs.
  • Ecosystem Management: Focuses on restoring, conserving, and sustainably using natural resources to enhance community resilience.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Implement eco-friendly and sustainable solutions to protect coastal ecosystems.
  • Resilience and Adaptation: Prioritize climate adaptation strategies to safeguard communities from environmental and economic shocks.
  • Community-Centered initiatives: Engage local communities as active participants in development and decision-making.
  • Gender Equality and Social Inclusion: Ensure equal opportunities and representation for marginalized groups, including women, indigenous communities, and persons with disabilities.

Development Approaches

Grassroots Democratization

We believe in shifting power to the people—ensuring that coastal communities actively participate in decision-making processes that affect their environment, lives, and future.

Right Based Approach

Our work is rooted in justice and dignity—promoting environmental rights, water rights, and the right to live in a safe, healthy, and resilient ecosystem.

Empowering Approach

CERIO strengthens the voices and capacities of marginalized groups—especially women, indigenous people, and youth—so they can lead climate solutions and advocate for their own development.

Networking and Partnership Approach

We collaborate with civil society, government, academia, and international allies to amplify impact, share learning, and drive collective action for sustainable coastal development.

Decentralization Approach

We promote locally-led governance and planning, enabling community institutions to take ownership of natural resource management and climate resilience initiatives.

Community Based Resource Management

CERIO supports local stewardship of land, water, and biodiversity—ensuring that communities manage resources equitably, sustainably, and in harmony with nature.

Indigenous Knowledge Based Development

We respect and integrate traditional knowledge systems, recognizing indigenous practices as vital to ecosystem restoration, climate adaptation, and cultural continuity.

Sustainable Development Approach

Our approach balances environmental health, social equity, and economic viability to ensure that today’s progress does not compromise the well-being of future generations.
